Work Experience at Beagle

Learning never stops

I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week at Beagle Media in Newquay. Taking the time to get my hands in with industry experience working for one of the big names in Cornwall. Beagle media has a reputation for creating some of the best works in Cornwall from their BBC Channel 2 Cornwall with Simon Reeve. and their Cornwall Air 999 with Discovery. This is how my week went.

How I got this work experience

I got it through a contact I know from working inside the company. I was friends with an editor there and I asked for a chance to just shadow in their office for a week and that brought me in contact with their production executive to arrange some time to be there. There were a few emails and also some following up but we got there eventually.

Note: A lot of times people are just busy and it takes them a lot of time to get through emails, it is ok to follow up and majority of people are amazing and nice, they are just busy.

Getting to the office

Honestly it is far from where I am with public transport. I was scheduled to come in at 9am which would mean leaving the house at about 6:30am to get the a few different busses to make sure I am there early enough. I ended up taking that bus and reached at about 8:30am. Was it tiring? Yes, but I would do it if it meant that I can come in to a workplace I enjoy and did something I always wanted to do.

Day to Day Work

Working in Beagle as a post house brought about what you think an editor would be doing, I had meetings with the production team and producers, talking about video projects, timelines, client feedbacks and some ideas on how to approach the project and what we have to do for them based on the project brief.

I got the chance to edit a few videos for them, sent it off and also receive some feedback from both the client and the producers to amend and keep at it for the week. Taking lunch breaks and small pockets to rest and mentally reset, the day to day is more or less just like an office jobs with little meetings and work. But I really love doing the work I did and it is something you love when the day goes by just like that.

The team

The people there were all so nice and welcoming, they were so encouraging to the work and are true professionals of the craft. Those calls and how they helped me warm up to get into the swing of work, being patient with me on my first day and to guide me through each task and orientating me. They were also really helpful giving me tips and taking the time to answer and doubts that I have when working on projects and to make sure that I can get everything right.

Even the managers are all really nice and I think the kept gave such a positive working environment for me to work. One that is calm and professional to be able to work creatively while focusing on delivering high quality work. I really felt like I was a part of them and it was an honour to be able to work with them for the week.

My experience

With the week over, there was a lot of things that I learnt in terms of editing techniques and some tricks along the way. I also felt a sense of relief where I some of the things I learnt I was also to remember and put them in practice, I also felt that I was able to keep up and being out of work and just doing smaller projects and doing them my way, it means a lot to know I still can adapt and I am able to work with others in a professional environment. I can believe a bit more in myself and I one of the main things I was told was to trust my gut and always believe, that is already half of the work done once you have the skills and believe you can do it. That is something that stuck with me and I hope to be able to do more of that in anything I do in future works.

Moving forward

With the week over, I said my thanks and goodbyes and I wanted to express my gratitude for this opportunity to work with them. I can now have this work experience under my CV and I know a few more faces in the industry that I can keep in contact with for the future to come. I don’t know what is next, but with another small step forward learning and progressing, I feel motivated again to keep going and to always bring myself forward for the next opportunity.

Thank you Beagle Media and the team there in giving me a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Till next time
