A Place We Call West Part 3

From Script to Screen, my first film breakdown Part 3: Editing and  Grading

WE ARE NOT FIXING IT IN POST!

Editing the film

We are not fixing it in post, but we are going to curate this film and bring it to life. I decided to edit on DaVinci Resolve for this project as we did not have that many shots to cut for this one shot film, but a lot of work will go into the grade of the film.

Editing this film started with the audio and listening to the best sound from the audio we recorded and pacing it out, with the best expression and pacing we then picked the best take for the video to compliment the audio. Then pairing the audio and video together, I adjusted accordingly to fit the pacing to create the film. I had to take regular breaks to reset and clear my thoughts to watch the film again with a fresh pair of eyes, having checkpoints in my progress to take time off before I come back and move on in order to have that separation from this project to watch it as a viewer as well to recreate that viewing experience. Once a few rounds of editing and cuts, we have it and picture lock and moved on.

Grading

From my mood board I tried my best to, recreate that in the grade for this film. It was a lot more work from out initial plan of shooting it with the sun setting to create a that effect naturally. But given that it was over casted, it was a create start to work with to create the effect I want.

From a Colour Space Transform to Rec709 Gammut 2.4, I went on to balance the shot before I push the contrast up to create that silhouette effect. With the silhouette established, it was all about bringing the rest of the colours down to take away any tones that we don’t one so that we can bring in the colours we really want. With the shot toned out, I introduced a glow to the show to give that dreamy feeling together with a warm overlay to the shot to make sure that  it brings that richness to the shot. To add the finishing touches to create that dreamy feel, I also added some film grain and halation to the shot.

Grade progression for the shot.

Picture locked

With the visuals done, we move on to audio for this film, having majority with the dialogue in place to  control the pacing of the film, we move forward to building the atmosphere in the world of sound and music.

Stay tuned!
